Daily Memo: US Sanctions on Iran, Germany’s Slow Recovery

The U.S. is drawing criticism for attempting to unilaterally reimpose U.N. sanctions on Iran.

Russian drills. The Caucasus 2020 military drills began on Monday in Russia’s Southern Military District. Roughly 80,000 personnel from Russia’s air, naval and special forces, as well as the Ministry of Emergency Situations, will take part in different stages of the drills. Up to 250 tanks, nearly 450 infantry fighting vehicles and armored personnel carriers, and 200 artillery systems and multiple launch rocket systems will be involved. Roughly 1,000 military personnel from Armenia, Belarus, China, Myanmar and Pakistan were invited to participate, and officials from Azerbaijan, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Sri Lanka are planning to attend as observers. The exercises, which will run until Saturday, are held annually but they are still attracting attention from Russia’s neighbors. Ukraine said it was closely watching the drills to identify any potential threats to its national security. Kyiv will begin its own military exercises on Tuesday that will involve 12,000 servicemen, 700 units of weapons and military equipment, and advisers from NATO members.
