Meredith Friedman: I will be in Vilnius in a couple of weeks so I wanted to read up on Lithuania and the Baltics in general. While we refer to one region surrounding the Baltic Sea, these countries are all very different. After the fall of communism, and after not having ruled over their own countries for almost a century, all three Baltic states understandably went through a period of upheaval and confusion with the creation of many new political parties between 1994 and 1997. Lithuania had 11 governments between 1990 and 2001. Since then, the parties have formed larger coalitions and have become more stable.
