Meredith Friedman: For Christmas, I was given this book, which I have only just started to read but which I want to share. From the perspective of history, psychology and anthropology, Junger looks at tribal society and how it creates loyalty and gives people a sense of belonging, and thus meaning, in their lives. This is pertinent for understanding how veterans return from combat and miss the camaraderie of their units. Junger’s thesis is that this contributes to the post-traumatic stress disorder our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan suffer from at the end of their deployments.
